Figuring things out & finding a way through, together.

What makes me a little different

I am an embodied, person-centered, intuitive & integrative therapist.

My core training was in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) therapist but I draw on lots of different approaches including MANTRA therapy and I work in a neuro-affirming, neuro-inclusive & sensory informed way.

I know that the words ‘CBT therapist’ might, understandably, put some people of but before you completely give up and stop reading bear with me whilst I try to explain myself a little further.

I am solution focused, but not in a "this is what you need to do" way, but in more of a "let's figure it out, together" way, and "if that didn't work, maybe we could try a different angle" way.

I believe that a person should not be squeezed into a therapy model, and a one size fits all approach

that does not take into account a person's sensory, or lived experience, can be tricky & I supervise and train teams guiding them to ensure that 'the model of therapy' is never chosen above the person sitting in front of them.

I am interested in the function of behaviour and believe that most things we do are some form of coping strategy and that recovery (or discovery) is partly about finding new ways to cope and be in the world.

As an example, if you are using a behaviour currently that is harming you in some way, we will explore together what needs might be being met by using this behaviour (e.g. is it also helping you in some way?)

This can then support us with finding new ways to meet the need we are trying to meet with the behaviour that still help us feel like we are coping, but in a way that might be less harmful for us.

A note also on "goal-setting" as a lot of CBT therapy can also be very focused on "goal setting".

Whilst I am not opposed to goal setting in principle as it can be super helpful for some of us, but not everyone

likes the use of that language (as we sometimes get scared to set goals in case we don't succeed which can make us feel too scared to try) and so we will work together to find what language best suits you specific needs to help you make progress.

Some other ideas that clients have previously found helpful to use instead are "ideas to practice", "plans" and "suggestions of things we could try". I will work with you to ensure that we find what is most helpful for you.

Traditionally "goal setting" can also be more focused on what the goals are, and not enough focus is given to how to actually reach them and a core skill of mine is helping you break things down into such "micro-steps" that, actually, they feel more manageable.

Ultimately, I see my role as a therapist as being a helpful guide on a chapter of your journey, â€‹â€‹ who can support you with building, and crossing, the bridge from where you are now to where you would like to be... (and helping you identify what that might be, if you aren't sure yet!)

So...what happens in a therapy session?

Therapy is space to support you with understanding yourself, your experiences, learning how to identify your needs & respond to them. It is also a space where I can support you navigating change, which some of us can find particularly scary for lots of different reasons.

I offer talking therapy, but I will also explore with you your preferred communication style. What that means is, if you prefer taking information in in video form I can hold this in mind and incorporate more videos into therapy to support your preferred learning style if we are exploring a concept that might help you navigate whatever you are experiencing.

I am also very adaptive and will do my very best to ensure that we understand each other. (I won't repeatedly ask you the same question (on loop!) if it is clear we aren't understanding each other, I will ask you in a different way, in a way that makes sense to you!)

My style/approach/ vibe of therapy

I am a very human therapist and I work in a very person centered way, drawing on various approaches, to best suit your individual needs & aims for therapy.

Sometimes certain therapies can can take a bit of a "one size fits all approach", and that is basically the opposite of what I practice & offer.

I see people as unique individuals and I see my role as a therapist as a guide who is there to support you in finding your own unique path to healing & making changes.

I also believe in the power of using the sharing of fragments of my own lived experience to support others people’s healing journeys, when this being supportive is indicated.

I am an adult diagnosed neurodivergent individual and I have lots of personal experience navigating the neurodivegent experience.

I also have significant experience supporting other neurodivergent individuals by adapting therapy and using a sensory informed approach (a pre-existing neurodivergent diagnosis is not required for us to consider and explore what adaptions you may find supportive!)

I guess what this means is that if you have struggled with other traditional "evidence base" therapies before (which can create a whole host of barriers to us reaching out again), please don't worry, as I will make sure that I do what I can to listen to what has & has not worked, and will do my very best to adapt what I can to ensure that your own unique needs are both held in mind, and met, and we will then figure things out (& the way through) together!

I don't have a magic wand, and in deep honesty, as much as in some ways I would love to wave one for you, we actually do learn so much on our healing journeys, I probably wouldn't wave it for you anyway, even if I did...see my musing titled 'your wound becomes your wings').

Therapy can, of course & very understandably, be really, really, really hard sometimes AND really, really, really importantlyno matter what, I hold an unwavering belief in people’s capacity to make change, no matter who they are (so, that includes you!) and no matter what they have experienced (see, this also includes you too!) and I will work both alongside and with you, to help you figure out what will (and won't!) be most helpful for you on the next steps of you life's journey.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

It depends!

Some people might need, or want, to be in therapy a lot longer than others.

There is so exact time frame on how long healing & making changes takes, but I can certainly recommend a guide starting point once we have had an initial assessment together and I have heard a little more about what you would like support with.

How long will a therapy session last?

Sessions will last roughly 50 minutes and will take place online on Zoom.

I say roughly as I am human and sometimes I run a little over from time to time if I intuitively or naturally feel we need an extra 5 mins or so to 'complete' the session.

I will also sometimes finish a few minutes early if I, & most importantly, we feel we have done enough for one session rather than stretching out for the final few minutes just for the sake of doing so. â€‹

"You have taught me so much which I will carry with me forever.

Anyone who gets to get a glimpse of your wisdom and kind words in the future is very lucky.

You helped turn my life around and I’m sure there are countless others you have and will do the same for."
